Women’s Water Polo Hopes to Succeed in NCS
Though it may be a commitment, the women’s water polo team is ready for the challenge that lies ahead this coming season. And nobody is more enthused than BHS junior Camille Fenn, one of the three varsity captains on the team. Fenn has been playing the sport since her freshmen year and has been swimming all of her life. Though the practices maybe rigorous, Fenn thinks of it as preparation for the season. “It’s really hard, especially if you haven’t done anything athletic for the past few months, and to go back into it has been grueling.” However Fenn takes it all in stride, “I love it, so it’s worth it.”
Sophia Haoui, a BHS junior, concurs with Fenn, “It’s been intense … we’re working so hard.” Along with Fenn, Haoui has been playing on the varsity water polo team since her freshmen year, and with a decent season last year, the girls hope to improve their record. “Last year, our goal was to win nine of our games and we exceeded that … this season we hope to win almost all of the games.” Fenn commented.
Not only is the goal of improving their record high on the list, but bringing the team together is a main goal as well.
“We really want to bring the team closer together … If we’re more like a family, then we’ll play more like a team,” says Fenn. Since the season is two months long, the team will be together for quite some time.
“We have games three times a week. We have been practicing everyday since August 16 … we’re getting to know each other pretty well,” says Haoui.
August 16 was the official start of the season, when the try–outs for both the women’s and men’s teams were held. “We have six new freshmen and they have been coming everyday. Last year it seemed that the freshmen weren’t committed… and to see the new freshmen excited is great,” noted Fenn. While there are new freshmen, the team lost a quite a few seniors this season. Fenn is anxious to see how the season plays out with the new recruits. “We have a whole new line–up from last year and it’s going to be exciting to see what happens.”
The main objective besides community building and improving their record, like all BHS teams, is to get to the North Coast Sectionals (NCS). “NCS is probably our biggest goal for the season,” said Haoui.
At the end of the season, though Fenn hopes to see the team at the league championships and NCS, he ultimately wants the team to feel good about themselves and the season. “I’d like to see them try their best and to have fun. I want them to have no regrets and for them to know they tried their best and their hardest.”
The women’s water polo team wants all of BHS to come out to the games and see their hard work pay off. “When you come out to the pool and the bleachers are filled with fans … it’s the most amazing feeling,” commented Fenn.
And watch out, other teams, BHS is coming to play hard. Haoui warned, “They’re not ready … they don’t know what’s coming.”
