BHS Teacher Remembers Former Sports Glory

Just as our Berkeley High School teachers decided to continue their time in school, many have also continued with their sports careers. One of these teachers is Peter Bloomsburgh, who has participated in many different sports throughout his life.
Though he’ll deny it, Bloomsburgh is quite the athlete, having participated in many sports, ranging from crew to track to swimming. Beginning with fifth grade games of keep-away, a schoolyard game involving wrestling, Bloomsburgh claims to be an unlikely athlete, calling himself “slow, short and weak.”

Those attributes didn’t seem to affect his success, however, because he was part of several teams while at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), including intramural hockey, where he played on the same team as a former Olympian; ping pong, where he was undefeated; and wrestling, in which he lost in the finals to a “really nerdy looking guy, which was sad because I was this big frat guy,” said Bloomsburgh. Shortly after MIT, he qualified for the Boston marathon with a 6:40 pace per mile.

The trait passed on to his children, both of whom played sports in college. His older son played tennis at MIT while his younger son played football at the University of Michigan.

Bloomsburgh’s two sons are his favorite sports players, and his favorite teams are the Michigan football team and the Boston Red Sox.
