New BUSD Employees

JORGE MELGOZA: Berkeley High School welcomes back Jorge Melgoza, who will join BHS as a new Vice-Principal. While his most recent work was that of Vice-Principal at Muir Middle School in San Leandro, Melgoza has a history at Berkeley High as an Intervention Counselor. He has also taught at both BHS and Berkeley Technology Academy.

DR. SUSAN CRAIG: Berkeley Unified School District is pleased to welcome Dr. Susan Craig as the district’s new Director of Student Services. Craig was born and raised in Berkeley and was a loyal attendee of Berkeley public schools throughout her childhood. She is a graduate of University of California, Berkeley and comes to BUSD with impressive knowledge and experience regarding student discipline issues and alternative education. She most recently worked for Vallejo Unified School District. Craig will replace Fulton Owens, who retired in June.

DELIA RUIZ: Delia Ruiz will join BUSD as the new Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, following the retirement of Lisa Van Thillo. Ruiz has worked in Oakland Unified School District since 1984 and has experience filling a wide range of roles. These include spanish teacher, curriculum coordinator and bilingual resource teacher. She has also served as principal and in three other Executive Officer positions.

MARY BUTTLER: Mary Buttler will take the position of Director of Personnel Services, the job previously held by Principal Scuderi. Buttler comes to BUSD with an extensive background in administrative work in education, including work as Interim Superintendent for Lagunitas School District in the Marin County Office of Education. For the last three years, she worked for Oakland Unified School District as Executive Officer for Instructional Services.
