Athlete Profile: Jesse Santos

By Erica Gratton

At the tender age of ten–years–old, Santos knew he would forever be in love with baseball, giving his all to make his dreams a reality. Coming into Berkeley High School as a freshman, Santos strove for his goals and since then he has thrived. Having invested three years into BHS’s baseball team and receiving the First Team All League Award, the senior now heads BHS baseball as Varsity Captain. Santos is determined to lead BHS Varsity Baseball to the playoffs this 2012 season.

Sumo Wrestling Club Introduces New Sport to Berkeley High

By Nico Correia

Weeks ago, sumo wrestling clubs were nonexistent in the Bay Area. However, the Berkeley High Sumo Wrestling Club, the brain child of Berkeley International High School (BIHS) juniors Paisley Sato, Nathaniel Solley, and Sarita Schreiber, is boldly stepping forward. Although it is still developing, the club is showing large — some may even say sumo — audacity as the pioneer of the Bay Area sumo wrestling club movement. The team began as a school research project, but quickly turned into something much greater.

Yellowjackets’ Baseball Season Ending, High Hopes Next Year

By Meg McCabe

The Berkeley High School Yellowjackets baseball team, coached by Matt Bremer, is heading towards the end of league competition, and all of the players and coaches have high hopes of qualifying for the North Coast playoffs. The team has a group of very strong seniors, some of whom will likely go on to play at a college level, and has a particularly deep pitching staff. Six different pitchers have started games for the Jackets this year, led by Tucker McPhaul. Meanwhile, Izzy Behrman has developed into an outstanding closer.

Crew Team Anticipates National Competition

By Jackson Jaeger

Berkeley High School is the only public high school with a varsity Men’s crew team west of the Mississippi. But this in no way means that the BHS Crew team can’t compete. In fact, the Yellowjacket crew team is a national force, consistently participating in national championships and often coming home with hardware, most recently a bronze medal at Nationals this past year.

Playtime: 5/4/12

By Jesse Barber

Major League Baseball (MLB) players are paid tremendous amounts of money. The contracts that these players get will not only set them for life, but, in some cases, cannot be spent in a lifetime. Are they really worth it?

Berkeley High Cheerleading Gets New Faces

By Alice Contopolous

Berkeley High cheerleading is at it again. It’s the beginning of the new season and the team is excited as it hopes to build upon last season’s trip to the USA Spirit Nationals. But a bid for the most prestigious high school cheerleading competition in America won’t come without work. Luckily, the teams have ample opportunities to strengthen their skills before they have to perform again in an attempt to return to the big stage.

Coachella Line-up a Blend of Old and New

By Ben Johnson

For the weekends of April 13–15 and April 20–22 , Empire Polo Field was filled with over 75,000 people for the twelfth Coachella music and art festival. Bay Area residents yearning to attend this world–renowned music festival had to commit to an eleven–hour drive and prepare to camp out for two or three nights.

Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist: 5/4/12

By Nick Kiniris

Acid Baby Jesus is dirty garage pop punk made by bratty Greek kids from Athens. Pertaining to their self–titled debut LP from Slovenly Records, I’ve heard comparisons to the psych punk of the Black Lips as well as to the drugs–era Beatles, which is more than apparent in “You Had it Coming,” a song that they should be sued for, as they directly rip off the opening riff of “I Saw Her Standing There.” My favorite songs are the stomping epic “Tomboy,” a fitting soundtrack for the Greek riots, and “I’m a Baby,” a song that fingers your heart in the cutest and yet creepiest way.

A Reliable Source: 5/4/12

By Misha Brooks and Jacob Hanawalt

Time has never had the best reputation. From what I’ve heard it’s not on your side, and according to many, it takes its toll. So what is Time’s deal? For as long as it’s been around it has been at least partially responsible for every death, it makes your new phone obsolete and your houses deteriorate. It’s time to take a closer look at the invisible menace, and to talk about how it has personally affected our loved ones and us.

Café Clem: A New, Delicious Spot For Students

By Tati Butcher

Café Clem, located at 2020 Kittredge Street, provides yet another convenient and delicious lunch spot for Berkeley High School students. Dorothée Mitrani-Bell, the owner of Café Clem and La Note, also in Downtown Berkeley, was inspired to open her restaurant because of “the space and the fact that it was in proximity to a lot of local entities.” The restaurant is conveniently centered between the Berkeley Public Library and BHS. She wanted to create a fun setting in a location that is accessible for a lot of people.
