Athlete Profile: Kevin Meador

By Dominic Francisco

Kevin Meador has been on the Berkeley High crew team since halfway into his sophomore year. Ever since then, he’s found a sport he loves. Despite an unfortunate loss at the regionals at Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Meador’s high school career is not marred. “This year I would say I learned a lot about the extent of the level of competition in the sport, as well as the importance of keeping up your motivation and intensity for the long run, because you can risk hitting the end of the learning curve,” he said.

BHS Athletics End With Successes and Dissappointments

By Alice Contopolous

Well, fans, that’s it. The balls have been deflated, unwashed jerseys collected, goals frustratingly locked up, most of the parkas have been returned, and the stands have emptied. The 2011-2012 season of Berkeley High School sports is at a close.

This year’s teams were full of exceptional athletes and extraordinary talent, but while many teams built upon previous years’ successes to excel, others failed to capitalize on opportunities and were forced to end their seasons early.

Varsity Baseball Ends Hard Fought Season With Dignity

By Miranda Taylor

Berkeley High School’s baseball team had a lot to be proud of when their season ended on Wednesday, May 23. Though the season was full of twists and turns, the team’s impressive comebacks and admirable chemistry created a winning team in the eyes of friends, family members, and spectators alike.

Early this season, BHS got off to a rough start.

“Our season can best be described as a series of streaks.” said Aaron Dresslar, a senior pitcher in AC: “We started losing a lot of close games to really strong teams and ended up at 1-8.”

Playtime: 6/1/12

By Jesse Barber

Professional baseball is a sport almost entirely based on money. For years, money has been a huge factor in winning a World Series. This season though, money has not been the largest factor. In fact, it has backfired on a few teams.
Eleven out of the last fifteen world series champions were among the top ten payrolls in baseball at the time. This has led to the steady increase of player salaries.

Berkeley High Athletes Play Summer Sports

By Meg McCabe

As seasons come to their close and championships are won and lost, many Berkeley High School athletes look forward to a break before summer training begins. While some teams at BHS do not have practice over the summer, many teams find a way to keep practicing during the off–season. This can be a struggle, since technically, under North Coast Section (NCS) rules, coaches are not allowed to coach their teams outside of the regular season. Still, players find ways to keep playing their sport all summer long, and some even manage to practice with their teammates.

BHS Football: Is the Risk Worth the Reward?

By Douglas Brennan

Over the last few years, more and more studies have been published demonstrating the dangers of playing tackle football. Lawsuits are being filed against the NFL by former players who are experiencing the after effects of repeated head trauma in their retirement. In fact, a former NFL quarterback named Kurt Warner recently came out and said that he would prefer his sons not play football, because the risk of injuries “scares me”. Given everything that is coming out regarding the hazards of playing tackle football, it is natural to wonder about the dangers of Berkeley High Football.

Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist: 6/1/12

By Nick Kiniris

The following is an excerpt from an interview by columnist Nick Kiniris with the up–and–coming East Bay hip–hop group Wizzz (formerly known as Momma Duck, and before that as Three):

Nick Kiniris: So, where’re you guys from?

Sammy (guitar/vocals): Yo, ay, ay, ay, we from all over the world bra, nah meeeeens? Like we stay up in this place, puttin’ it down…

James Otis (bass): MOLD STUDIOS REPRESENT!

Sammy: Represent dat knowledge bra, yea. We stay in Oakland, we stay in Berkeley, we stay in the East Bay, we all over the world. You don’t even know, it don’t stop. Okay we good.

Curren$y Kept Crowd Waiting Only to Disappoint

By Ashley Alexander

In our ever–evolving world, music is always undergoing major changes. Unlike in the good old days of mixing tables, music production is now done mostly by computer, with programs like Pro Tools. Singers can now rely on modern technology to steady and perfect their wavering tonality or nasally voices. It is unfortunate, but it has become commonplace for artists to sound great on a digital track, but sorely disappoint their fans when they sing on stage, using nothing but their raw voices.
Recently, I found this to be true of one of my favorite artists, Curren$y.

A Reliable Source: 6/1/12

We assume that there was a point in time where language was more delicate. People these days string together meaningless words without care, maybe throwing a couple of “swags” in there for good measure. It seems that we, as a generation, have lost the appreciation for the beauty of linguistics. Of course, throughout history people have often taken sophomoric ideas and introduced them to the English language in the form of idioms, proverbs, and maxims. Many of these we don’t hear on a regular basis, but others seem to come up far too often.

Thrifting Helps the Environment and Your Wallet

By Juliette Mueller

Why would anybody make the choice to wear used clothing? First and foremost, it’s fun. When you wear vintage or thrifted clothing, you’re sure to stand out from a crowd, as the chances of somebody else wearing something the same or even similar to what you’re sporting are slim to none. Shopping at a thrift store practically guarantees that you won’t have to deal with those unfortunate moments where your classmate happens to be wearing the exact same top you both purchased from Urban Outfitters’ sale rack.
