Join the Staff

Join the Berkeley High Jacket and be a part of producing a paper read by thousands of BHS students, teachers, administrators, and families.

The Jacket currently has open positions for writers, photographers, illustrators, and columnists. Positions on the Jacket’s staff are open to all Berkeley High students, regardless of grade or experience level.

Jacket writers meet two to three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and alternating Fridays during zero period to generate story ideas, work on articles, meet with editors, and critique the paper. Writers are responsible for attending all classes and writing five articles a semester. Writers receive five credits for enrollment in the Jacket class and receive a grade for their work. Jacket fulfills the Berkeley High School elective graduation requirement. For more information about being a writer, email charlottew@bhsjacket.com.

Jacket photographers meet once a week on Wednesdays during lunch. Photographers also receive credit and a grade for their work. For more information, email jamiel@bhsjacket.com.

Jacket illustrators and cartoonists meet once a week on Tuesdays during lunch and receive credit and a grade for their work. For more information about Jacket Art, email madeleinel@bhsjacket.com.

The Jacket’s multimedia content is put together by a group of students enrolled in Dharini Rasiah’s Communication Arts and Sciences video production classes. To become involved with Jacket Multimedia, email the multimedia editors at daniellee@bhsjacket.com and alecm@bhsjacket.com.

Jacket columnists do not have to attend any Jacket meetings, and do not receive elective credit. Columnists serve for one semester and are responsible for submitting a 500-word column every two weeks, which is published in the paper. Columnist positions are available for the Opinion, Features, Entertainment and Sports sections. To request an application, please email noahb@bhsjacket.com. Applicants must submit two sample columns by September 16th for consideration.

If you are unable to join the Jacket’s staff you can still contribute to the paper by submitting content as a guest writer, photographer or illustrator.
