The Key Club Makes Volunteering Cool

By Emma Snyder

"If I had to say one thing about Key Club I would say that it rocks, and we don't make keys! I get to do fun volunteer events that I get to choose to do with my friends and I build my resume at the same time.
Not that many people at Berkeley High had heard of us until this year and now our meetings are the place to be for lunch on Mondays. Take that Loxstock!" Emily Trumble, Project Chair of Key Club, enthusiastically exclaimed. Key Club has been a popular tradition at many schools for a long period of time, however this year, the club is exceeding expectations from previous years. Emma Tadlock-Goldsmith, Key Club president explains, “The club used to be really popular, but in the past few years there has been a decline in interest. So this year we really rallied and now have forty to fifty active members, compared to the ten or fifteen last year.” Key Club participates in various community service projects, with a mission to get involved in both our school and our community at large. They meet every monday at lunch in room C115. The club is a branch of the Kiwanis International organization, which Tadlock-Goldsmith describes as a “group all over the world that deals with raising money and distributing it through scholarships and in many instances donating it to non-profits. They also put on numerous community service events.” Over the summer, Key Club took part in the AIDS Walk in San Francisco, hosting bake sales and other fundraisers to sponsor the walkers. Two weekends ago, the club volunteered at the J.D.R.F. Diabetes Walk. Going green is also on the agenda this year. Tadlock-Goldsmith plans to “do more events with our Kiwanis sponsors. We also want to do more environmentally conscious events like cleaning up parks, planting trees, and getting involved with these types organizations.”
