Hip Hop Concepts: 9/30/2011

By Sebastian Moraga

What’s good Berkeley high? Here we are again, a new year has begun, and there are a handful of new writers for you to read. My name is Sebastian Moraga and I am one of the new Entertainment Columnists this year. This week I’m covering a smattering of new up and coming artists in several different genres.
For most of my life I’ve been intersted in a large variety of music, ranging from Brazilian, all the way to Soul, and over to more Alternative genres. As you get to know my column more, this will probably come out more and more as I discuss different genres week to week.

Oakland-Based Dance Company Celebrates 20th Anniversary

By Esther Robinson–Abrams

When you think of a typical dance show, you usually picture a stage, plush chairs and tiered seating. Project Bandaloop is a dance company with a completely original style of dance. They perform aerial dance vertically, turning the stage on its side. The company was founded in 1991 by Amelia Rudolph. A trained dancer and rock climber, Rudolph was inspired to create Project Bandaloop when she saw the grace with which a world renowned rock climber scaled a cliff.

New Restaurants on Shattuck

By Emma Koger

Everyday when that lunch bell rings Berkeley High experiences a surge of frantic students. Whether it’s to finish that fourth period homework you didn’t do last night or to get a bite to eat, we all are in a rush. Nonetheless we still want to find good new places to eat, one that fits our budget, our time schedule, and has a convenient location. Luckily on top of the numerous restaurants on Shattuck, every year new restaurants move to Shattuck and soon become part of the Berkeley High lunch routine.

Crazy Stupid Love is Pleasant Summer Surprise Thanks to Cast

By Ashley Alexander

Romantic Comedies. They’re predictable, repetitive and sometimes I wonder how they can make so few variations between each flick and call it a new movie. But I still give them a chance once in a blue moon. They may be redundant, but most people cannot deny that they are generally guaranteed to be cheap, easy entertainment for a couple of mindless hours. Crazy Stupid Love features a promising cast; so, with pre-formed opinions and predictions, I dove in.

Pizzaiolo Offers Summer Fun

By Tal August

A few weeks ago, I saw a great movie in a great location. The movie, titled The Warriors, was made in 1979 and is takes place in New York City during the same time. The Warriors is about a gang from Coney Island called (you guessed it) “The Warriors,” who were framed for the assassination of the most powerful gang leader in the city. The movie follows nine unarmed Warrior members from a citywide gang meet (where the gang leader is shot) back to their home in Coney Island. On the way, they encounter numerous different gangs and police out to get them.

G-Eazy Releases New Album

By Ashley Alexander

Living in the Bay Area, home to some of the greatest hip-hop and rap classics of our generation, we are exposed to a smorgasbord of local artists. One such artist is G-Eazy, a self-proclaimed “rapper, producer, performer, graphic designer and video editor.” Most Berkeley High School students have probably heard the name thrown around, if not already owning a number of his tracks. He’s still an up-and-comer–his name barely getting past California’s borders–but he’s performed with big names like Curren$y and Afroman.

BHS Class of ‘61 Reunion

By Tal August

This year the Berkeley High School class of ’61 is having their 50th high school reunion. The reunion takes place in October this year. Now, for many of you this little piece of information is unimportant, but for me personally this is quite a big thing. Obviously, I am not part of the class of ’61, but my uncle is. Not only that, but he is on the planning committee for the reunion.

Orchestra Impresses Audiences

By Elle Holland

The Berkeley High School Chamber Music Concert was a success. Performed by the zero–period orchestra, the concert featured different groups of students playing chamber music without the help of a conductor.

It was a fun and lively show, not only because of the great musical talent, but also because of the creative — and sometimes hilarious — costumes and outfits referencing the music, whether it was just wearing the same color shirt, or dressing up head–to–toe like a nutcracker.

Actors Boost Quality of No Strings Attached

By Abbey Chaver

Remember when Anne Hathaway did Rachel Getting Married and everyone thought she was incredible? And then she did Bride Wars and everyone was thoroughly unimpressed, not only with her performance, but with her presence in such a terrible movie. Well, this is what I was anticipating when I walked into No Strings Attached.

I Love (Obscure) Movies: 2/4/11

By Zev Haggitt

I like movies a lot. I would say more than the average American, or probably the average person (forget Americans). The movies I like the most, often, are not on people’s movie–watching radar. I have found that most of my peers do not stray far from the path in terms of their movie choices. They’ll see the movies that one is expected to see and leave it at that. Fortunately, we now have Netflix. If you don’t have Netflix, and you like movies, do yourself a favor, get it immediately. All of the movies I’m going to suggest will be available there.
