Lunch How I Like My _______: Tasty & Cheap
Berkeley is renowned for its liberal attitude, distinguished university and delectable food. Fortunately for the students of Berkeley High School, our school is located downtown, which is full of restaurants. Every day, establishments open their doors and await their potential customers at the sound of the lunch bell. BHS lets out over three thousand kids during lunch, who swarm to different eateries in the area. Of the many places to eat lunch at in downtown Berkeley, the following are five of the best.
5. Tapioca Express is a cozy hole–in–the–wall that sells a variety of unique beverages and snacks, from Taiwanese slushies, iced coffee, and ramen noodles to French fries. Located on Shattuck and Center, its appeal comes from the small balls of boba milk tea known as tapioca, which can be added to slushies, smoothies, and milk teas.
4. Razaan’s Organic Kitchen serves mouthwatering food, but for a pretty penny. Located on Shattuck and Kittredge, Razaan’s is a locally–owned business that serves exclusively organic food. It uses these high–quality ingredients to make some of the best tasting food in the downtown area. Some of the most popular dishes on the menu are the Jerusalem wrap, the Egyptian wrap and the chicken burrito. The only downside is the price one must pay for quality organic fare — a wrap, for example, sells for around eight bucks. Razaan’s Organic Kitchen serves a mixture of Middle Eastern and Mexican food at a “split it with your friends” price.
3. Yogurtland is cheap, quick and easy. On Shattuck and Kittredge right next to the cinema, it is a popular self–serve frozen yogurt bar, well–known for its array of interesting flavors. Some of the most popular include peanut butter, blood orange and red velvet cupcake batter. Yogurtland is recognized for the vast amount of toppings, including fresh fruits, popular cereals and even more popular candies. Yogurtland is definitely the cheapest place to get your frozen yogurt fix.
2. Top Dog is Berkeley’s favorite hot dog joint. Providing cheap and delicious hot dogs starting at just three dollars, Top Dog offers a wide variety, from the classic “Top Dog” to a polish sausage called “Kielbasa” to the vegetarian dog simply called “The Weenie.” This shop is a Berkeley classic, located on Center and Shattuck, where delicious dogs are offered for very cheap. Students can even buy a doggie bag for $4.50, which includes any type of hot dog, a bag of chips and a small soda.
1. Chris’s Thai Cuisine is cheap, filling, and delicious. This restaurant is a small new establishment that has taken the place of High Tech Burrito’s. Chris’s serves many Thai classics, such as Pad Thai, Yellow Green and Red curry, and many other lunch specials that sell for six dollars each. Thai iced tea sells for two dollars, and the service is generally great. Located on Durant and Shattuck, Chris’s Thai Cuisine is the perfect place to get inexpensive quality food.
