Artist Spotlight: Zoë O’Rorke
Zoë O’Rorke is a junior in Communication Arts and Sciences (CAS), a dedicated poet, a talented photographer and a photo editor.
During her freshman year Zoë began learning about photography and media in her CAS classes. “In our communication arts classes you have to learn about media, photography and Photoshop. They start off with the basics and then raise the bar with each project.
“I got really into it really quick,” said O’Rorke. The current CAS juniors have received two years of media art classes and have two more ahead of them, so most of Zoë’s photo editing has been done inside of the classroom. “You get a lot of great feedback and criticism from your classmates and it makes you push yourself. I definitely plan to keep photographing, using Photoshop, and using it to earn some cash.”
Zoë won an award last year for her skills in photo editing, but it is not her favorite art form. Her preferred outlet is poetry. “What I love most is that so many different words can be used to describe so many different emotions. Words have power and I’m honored to be able to manipulate words in such a way,” said O’Rorke.
Zoë started writing in the eighth grade and has not stopped. Zoë aspires to publish her own book of poetry; one of her poems, “Wasted Years,” has already been published. “A while ago I submitted some poems onto several contests online. I didn’t really think about them and then I got this letter in the mail telling me that my poem was going to be published.”
Zoë’s poem can be found in “The Golden Edition,” published by the American Poetry Foundation.
