Bay Area Urban Schools Student Leadership Conference Aims To Bring Larger Community Closer Together

High schools in the Bay Area can often feel disparate and unconnected, but at the first annual Bay Area Urban Schools Student Leadership Conference (USSLC) on March 20, representatives from regional urban high schools gathered together at Berkeley High School to close the gap. One hundred and forty students from thirteen schools around the Bay Area convened for the day to discuss and brainstorm solutions to issues specific to urban schools, such as gang violence, self-segregation, and campus safety.

Athlete Profile: Elisha Davis

Elisha Davis is a talented young woman who has been a force on the basketball court ever since age six. Davis is a sight to see on the court; one second she is pulling up in your face for a long three-point shot and the next she blows by and drives to the hoop for a layup. “I wouldn’t say I like basketball. I love basketball; I eat, sleep, and breathe basketball,” Davis explained.

The Berkeley Rhinos Rugby Club finished their season with a league record of 5-6 and have decided to forgo a run in the league playoffs, bringing the year to an end.

Curling Club at BHS Looks for Recognition

Curling is a sport that is widely popular in Canada, but hasn’t quite caught on in the United States. The sport — that’s right, it’s a sport — has been around since the sixteenth century. Curling is a game of precision and accuracy. Played on a sheet of ice, teams push a stone across the ice, called the skip. Players brush the ice with a curling broom to change the speed or direction of the curl. The stone is pushed towards a circular target, called the house, and the closest to the center of the circle accumulates the most points.

BHS Ultimate Frisbee: Fun Sport, Fun Team

The Berkeley High School Ultimate Frisbee team is enjoying another successful season under the guidance of Head Coach Jordan Rose, now in his sixth year at the helm. Rose began coaching when his daughter was a freshman at BHS and has stayed on due to his love of the game and his desire to create a great Frisbee program at BHS. The Hunger Games Delights But Also Confuses Viewers

The anticipation for The Hunger Games was out of this world; people lined up for hours and even days to be a part of the phenomenon. The movie adaption is based on the series of books by Suzanne Collins. The film, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, takes place post–apocalypse in the country of Panem which consists of a luxurious Capitol and twelve surrounding impoverished Districts.

Internet Gives Quick and Easy Entertainment

When Netflix was introduced in 1999, it changed the way we watch television. When Hulu was created in 2008, it once again altered the way viewers watch their favorite shows. We are constantly finding ways to revolutionize what viewers watch and how they watch it. One recent introduction has been the Internet television show. Internet television shows are short five to fifteen minute episodes found on sites like YouTube, Yahoo, and Hulu; they are extremely addictive. Internet TV shows are being released on the web daily and in enormous quantities.
