Political Club Hosts Forum for Berkeley's Mayoral Candidates

On Monday, the Diverse Political Views Club and Berkeley High School Leadership hosted Berkeley High School’s first mayoral candidate debate. Beginning at 7:00 PM, the debate took place in BHS’s College Career Center and featured incumbent mayor Tom Bates as well as hopeful candidates Bernt Wahl, Jacquelyn McCormick, Kahlil Jacobs–Fantauzzi, Kriss Worthington, Mark Shwartz, and Zachary RunningWolf.

Artist Spotlight: Obasi Davis

If you’re wondering the whereabouts of Green Academy junior, Obasi Davis, allow me to enlighten you. Davis enjoys sorting his thoughts out onto paper in the form of poetry. He can always be found scribbling down rap lines throughout the day and occasionally yelling them down the hallway. Davis has been immersed in both music and spoken word since day one as his father is the national program director of Youth Speaks, an organization aimed towards bettering students’ ability to express themselves through performing arts.

BHS Welcomes Back Graduate Katie Henry As Fall Playwright

Katie Henry graduated from Berkeley High School in 2008 and went on to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University for playwriting, graduating in May of 2012. Her first semester there, she wrote a play called Re–Drowning Ophelia, which is BHS’ fall play this year.

Athlete Profile: Molly Ginsburg

Senior Molly Ginsburg is the captain of the powerhouse that is the Berkeley High School varsity volleyball team. Ginsburg is a leader, coordinating the team’s spirited chants, and she explains, “A big part of being a leader is being able to keep the team working as a unit even during intense and difficult matches.” This year the volleyball team consists of a small, elite team of only nine people, and Ginsburg carries critical responsibilities as the captain of the varsity squad since the team must always be on the same page. “As the season goes on we get closer and closer,” stated Ginsburg.

Intramural Dodgeball Tournament Proves Successful And Fun

Berkeley High School Student Activities Director John Villavincencio came up with the idea for a staff versus student dodgeball tournament at a conference for Student Activity Directors. Villavincencio said, “I learned that Activity Directors are some of the most creative people on a school campus because they have to work with so many different groups.”
Inspired by someone at the conference who mentioned how they had started intramural dodgeball for students at their school, Villavincencio came up with the idea for a dodgeball tournament at BHS.

Girls’ Field Hockey New Player Initiation: Cruel or Kind?

On Friday, September 28, the halls of Berkeley High School were filled with girls in red and white skirted uniforms, their faces covered in face paint. They held signs advertising their game, to be played later than day. The posters contained slogans such as “Sticks and Balls” and “F–Hock.”

Sports Med. Provides Unique Option for Students

One of the great things about Berkeley High School is the ability to take classes that would otherwise not be offered until college. The popular Sports Medicine course is an example one of these classes offered at BHS. Through interactive activities, students learn more about the human anatomy and how to treat sports injuries. The class is taught by Jamie Faison, the Head Athletic Trainer at BHS. As the trainer, Jamie has office hours to work with athletes if they have injuries.

BHS Cross Country Is Tough But Rewarding
