Sock Shop on Telegraph Has Sole

By Hannah Herman

Telegraph Avenue is known for all sorts of wacky shops and people. Sockshop Telegraph, a new store specializing in socks, has recently opened and fits right in with the Telegraph environment.

The store has walls lined with every kind of sock imaginable. There are socks with mustaches, sandwiches, flying pigs, Hello Kitty, adorable dogs and cats, frogs with bulging eyes, toast and so much more occupying the shop. One of the socks has an alligator on it that looks like it is about to eat your leg, while another has 3–D glasses on it. The store also has socks with words like “TOFU,” “NERD,” “EVIL,” “MAZEL TOV,” “OBAMA,” and “ZOMBIE,” which are entertaining to mix and match. The sheer number of novelty socks in the store is astounding and the vibrant colors of the socks light up the store. In addition, the store sells leggings and tights.

Sockshop was founded by Eric and Ellen Gil, who already have two Sockshops, one in Santa Cruz and the other on Haight St. in San Francisco. They said that it is their mission to find the newest fabrications for the best outdoor experience and the very best in phenomenal graphics of all kinds. Sarah, the daughter of the owners and an employee at the Telegraph branch, added that the company has been around for 24 years. She noted that her parents started the shop on a whim on April 1, 1988 in Santa Cruz. She also said that “Berkeley has been very welcoming so far.”

Cassy, another employee at Sockshop Telegraph, has been with the shop since it opened about a month ago. She said that the store is trying to get more socks for men, as well as more different sizes so more people can find socks and tights that fit them.

While the shop does stock socks from many brands, they also sell the Socksmith brand, which employees at the Santa Cruz Sockshop help design. Cassy remarked that “they want [to stock from] more companies that are made in the US and want to keep [the products] as local as possible.”

Come check out the Sockshop the next time you are on Telegraph. The socks are relatively cheap (most pairs are between $8 and $15) and your feet will never look the same. The shop is located at 2505 Telegraph Ave. Visit socksmith.com to buy their socks online.
