Café Clem: A New, Delicious Spot For Students

By Tati Butcher

Café Clem, located at 2020 Kittredge Street, provides yet another convenient and delicious lunch spot for Berkeley High School students. Dorothée Mitrani-Bell, the owner of Café Clem and La Note, also in Downtown Berkeley, was inspired to open her restaurant because of “the space and the fact that it was in proximity to a lot of local entities.” The restaurant is conveniently centered between the Berkeley Public Library and BHS. She wanted to create a fun setting in a location that is accessible for a lot of people. Mitrani-Bell has been working in the food industry for over twenty years and on her own for fifteen. “I think my café is a good fit in Berkeley because people in Berkeley respond to interesting and fun environments with wholesome food in a nice atmosphere that is welcoming,” said Mitrani-Bell.

Café Clem is Parisian–themed, serving a wide range of French cuisine. In Paris, cafés act as centers of social and culinary life. Parisian cafés serve as meeting places, conversation matrices, neighborhood hubs, and places to relax for locals. “It’s Parisian without the tobacco.” she explains.

At the moment, the most popular dishes are ‘La Dog’, “which is an organic French hot dog on baguette” and the ‘Grilled Cheese’.

I found ‘La Dog’ to be appetizing and enjoyable, and it was definitely my favorite dish out of the ones I tried. Although these are currently the most popular dishes, there is no shortage in selection. This quaint restaurant also offers coffee, hot chocolate (with whipped cream and dark and white chocolate shavings!), and an assortment of pastries. Dorothee’s personal favorite dishes are the salads. She enjoys “healthy foods that are made with sustainable healthy ingredients.”
In addition to serving healthy and filling foods, Café Clem also caters. Mitrani-Bell says that “It’s intended for lots of office events and college and high school events as well.”

Additionally, all the dishes are well–priced, which is one of the most obvious concerns for high school and local university students alike. However, these affordable prices should be no indication that the food is of low quality. Almost every dish on the menu had an organic component or was made with delicious breads, not to mention the freshly squeezed orange juice.

Café Clem is a beautiful place to relax, eat, and socialize. In the wake of Bartlett’s recent close, this affordable and delectable new cafe has taken rise. Additionally, it seems to be a good fit as it’s your typical Berkeley eating spot, with delicious food and a satisfying twist. Right in the center of Berkeley, Café Clem is easy to access for an enticing lunch and breakfast before the bell. So before you hit the books, head down to Café Clem!
