Marcia Flores is a successful graduating Communications Arts and Sciences (CAS) senior. Marcia is graduating this year with experience in social justice issues, public and community service, film and music production, radio hosting and radio show production.

Marcia explains that “CAS has made my experience at Berkeley High School special because of the social justice topics we talk about and the different insights we have on past and current events. The different opinions everyone has in CAS have influenced me and my actions. I don’t think I would think the way I do if I wasn’t in CAS.”

Flores also acknowledges her video teacher, Dharini Rasiah, for exposing her to programs such as Youth Radio and the 2020 Vision. “Ms. Rasiah has given me the opportunity to work on the 2020 Vision video project. Working on this project made me interested in the unequal opportunities [in my community].”

Flores has worked on a film that documents the work of the 2020 Vision team, a group of people dedicated to solving the achievement gap that exists in Berkeley schools by following the educational perspective of the youth of the 2020 graduating year. Flores explains that she gained video editing and interviewing skills from working on the 2020 Vision project.

Flores’ plans for the future include college and possibly a career as a social worker. She plans to attend San Francisco State University in the coming year and will major in International Relations with a minor in Political Science, though she is leaving her major open for adjustments.

“Immigration and Latino rights is what I’m mostly interested in, and I might change my major into something related to those topics.” Marcia also has aspirations to travel and assist in achieving rights for people in third world countries. “If there is some type of program at SF State where I can study abroad, I would do it for a year. It does not matter to me where I would go because it would be an experience regardless, but I would go to a third world country because I want to help out in places where [my help] is needed.”

Flores wants to have a career involving some type of social work, specifically in the Latino community.
“As my career, I plan on being a social worker, if I feel like that isn’t enough [of an assistance to my community] in the future, I might want to become an immigration lawyer.”
