Luis Flores
The Community Arts and Sciences (CAS) senior class has many leaders, but perhaps none as outstanding as Luis Flores. Luis is one of the most hardworking students in CAS, both in and out of the classroom. Every morning, he can be found in the BHS sound studio in C400. In addition to his work in CAS Advanced Video class, Luis does multimedia work for the larger BHS community, as well as the community at large, filming academic and athletic events. Recently, he covered the Hall of Fame induction for notable Berkeley High athletes. In addition to his film work, he also is part of the Oakland–based Youth Radio program.
CAS is one of the most close–knit communities at Berkeley High. Like most CAS students, Luis’s experience at Berkeley High was shaped by his small school, both academically and socially. Luis elaborated: “My social life was shaped by CAS, because all of my friends are in CAS. CAS is different in terms of education. CAS teachers challenge students with different types of discussions or debates that you might not find in a non-CAS classroom.” These diverse learning styles have helped Luis become a thoughtful, socially conscious student.
In addition to his experience in CAS, Luis is also leaving with an impression of BHS in general. When asked about his opinion of the school at large, he responded: “Berkeley High, while it’s diverse and progressive compared to other places, still has a lot of work to be done it terms of racial equality.” Next year, Luis will be attending the University of California, at Berkeley. He’s still undecided about what to major in, but is leaning towards ethnic studies. He plans to keep his job at Youth Radio, and possibly come back to work in the BHS video department.
