CPA Ceremony for 2010
The Community Partnership Academy (CPA) graduation took place on June 3. Students, parents, and teachers gathered to speak about their classroom experiences, and reflect on their time at CPA. “The students enjoyed celebrating the sense of family and the bonds they had developed over their years together” said Annie Johnston, CPA lead teacher and the graduation’s coordinator.
“It was a great event,” added Flora Russ, CPA technology mentor.
CPA has helped many students achieve success since its inception, in 2005, at Berkeley High School. Student internships, an Advanced Placement English augmentation program, and an Interactive Mathematics Program are all incorporated into the small school environment, and help contribute to a strong sense of community described by many of the graduating class.
“[CP] Academy teachers integrate the curriculum around themes related to community through project-based service and experiential learning. Throughout the students’ experience in the academy, they are directly involved with community organizations that are focused on but not limited to human services, such as law, health and government. We are committed to creating a school community in which all students are welcome, every student counts and every student achieves,” writes Johnston on the CPA website.
English classes are looped so that students can learn from the same teacher for multiple years in a row, and writing coaches are available to work with CPA underclassmen one on one. CPA strives to cultivate a strong sense of community as well as individualized learning
The graduation was an opportunity for students and staff to reflect on their high school community and their experiences in CPA. “[Students] read poetry, sang, gave speeches, and generally appreciated all they got from each other,” said Johnston. “[They] enjoyed celebrating the sense of family and the bonds they had developed over their years together, and they expressed a strong appreciation for the Community Partnership Academy, teachers, and fellow students.”
Many students gave emotional speeches, and Russ’ speech received a standing ovation. The sense of community was obvious, and celebration was in the air. Soon–to–be CPA graduates now look forward to the exciting close of their high school careers, and the beginning of life outside of BHS.
