BHS Asian Graduation

Berkeley High School is about nine percent Asian-American students, and every year, the Asian Pacific Islander Committee (APIC) of BHS hosts a graduation for its high school seniors to help bring these students together in celebration of their culture.

With about 15 or 20 kids in its graduating class, the Asian graduation was a fairly small and intimate event. This event was held to “celebrate Asian heritage and the fact that the young members of our community have been so successful,” as BHS teacher Dana Moran said in her introduction. The whole event seemed centered around the theme of family and culture. Many of the seniors made speeches, thanking their families and Berkeley High for the past four great years. A speech was also given on the importance of a college education, despite the worsening economy. However, on a more light-hearted note there were a few performances, including a dance and piano piece by the graduates. Along with the playing of “Pomp & Circumstance,” sashes were given to each individual

Overall, the event was a genuine way to appreciate the importance of education, gather together and celebrate the accomplishment of making it through all four years at Berkeley High, and for most of the students, attending college.
