Congratulations, Class of 2010! You’ve Finally Made It

Although at times it may seem as if a high school diploma is not looked at as an incredible accomplishment, all of you should be proud of yourselves for making it to this day. Over the past four years all of you have faced various challenges and your will to continue through the long grind of high school has weakened at times. Regardless of what college you are attending next fall or your plans for the future are, you have to realize that you have persevered just by graduating, just by making it through.

Inaugural BIHS Senior Class Celebrates

The first ever Berkeley International High School (BIHS) class at Berkeley High graduated on Friday, May 21, 2010, allowing BHS Principal Jim Slemp to see his pioneer students complete the program which he helped establish four years earlier.
The ceremony was held at the Pauley Ballroom on the University of California, Berkeley Campus, where Master of Ceremonies Coleman Lukas led the program through an engaging series of performances and speakers, both entertaining and sentimental.

The Community Partnership Academy (CPA) graduation took place on June 3. Students, parents, and teachers gathered to speak about their classroom experiences, and reflect on their time at CPA. “The students enjoyed celebrating the sense of family and the bonds they had developed over their years together” said Annie Johnston, CPA lead teacher and the graduation’s coordinator.

“It was a great event,” added Flora Russ, CPA technology mentor.

On May 29 in the Berkeley Rep theater, approximately sixty Communication Arts and Science (CAS) students celebrated their upcoming graduation.

The ceremony included a speech by Beatriz Leyva of the school board and executive director of BAHIA. CAS teacher Amy Crawford told of her memories with the class of 2010, emphasizing her experience as a PE teacher.

The Arts and Humanities Academy (AHA) 2010 graduation night was a major success. With touching speeches by teachers, tearful words from students, and a student dance performance, the AHA 2010 graduating class made their mark on Berkeley High School. During the ceremony, every student had their own speech, during which many thanked their family, teachers, friends, and most commonly AHA itself.

The ceremony truly began at 1 PM at St Joseph’s Church. This mass is very important for the seniors, because it’s a time to thank God for having gotten to the place where they are now, and ask him for strength for the road ahead. They gathered in the front steps wearing their billowing robes of red and yellow. Though it was bright and sunny outside, the glass windows gave a darkened and solemn feel inside the parish.

Berkeley High School is about nine percent Asian-American students, and every year, the Asian Pacific Islander Committee (APIC) of BHS hosts a graduation for its high school seniors to help bring these students together in celebration of their culture.

It was fitting that the venue chosen for the School of Social Justice and Ecology (SSJE) graduation was the non–profit David Brower Center near Berkeley High, one of the Bay Area’s most advanced green buildings and a home for environmental and social action combing both office and program facilities, as the ceremony reflected the very essence of what the small learning community represents.

African–American Studies Graduation

In its nineteenth year, the African-American Studies Celebration of Excellence, also called the “Black Graduation” was a “positive event... its is extremely pleasing that the community has been so supportive.” according to Robert McKnight, the African-American Studies Department (AASD) chair.

The event was not only a graduation ceremony, but also a remembrance of one of the founders of the AASD, Dr. Richard D. Navies. “We do it to honor his legacy.” commentsed McKnight.
